According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), total global export turnover in 2023 reached 23.8 trillion USD, down 5% compared to the previous year. About 20 out of the world’s top 30 exporting countries recorded a decrease in export value. The number of global trade restrictions has increased nearly 5 times since 2015, reaching nearly 3,000 restrictive measures in the past year.
With an export turnover of 354 billion USD, accounting for 1.5% of the world, Vietnam ranked 23rd out of the 30 largest exporting economies in the world. However, Vietnam’s export value in 2023 decreased by 4.6% (down about 17.04 billion USD) compared to the previous year.
In particular, the sharpest decrease was in commodity groups such as telephones of all kinds and components, down 5.61 billion USD; textiles and garments down 4.27 billion USD; footwear of all kinds down 3.66 billion USD; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts down 2.62 billion USD; wood and wood products down 2.54 billion USD; seafood down 1.95 billion USD; chemicals and chemical products down 750 million USD…
In addition, the export of some commodity groups in 2023 still achieved high growth compared to the previous year. Specifically, vegetables and fruits increased by 2.24 billion USD; means of transport and spare parts increased by 2.17 billion USD; rice increased by 1.22 billion USD; cashew nuts increased by 558 million USD.
Despite rising protectionism and global trade barriers, China continues to assert its position as the world’s largest exporter, exporting $3.4 trillion last year, nearly $1.4 trillion more than the United States.
The United States last was the world’s largest exporter in 1979. But since then, the country has seen a widening trade deficit. However, energy exports—the largest U.S. export—have swung from deficit to surplus over the past decade. In 2023, the U.S. net energy trade surplus was $65 billion. Significant increases in domestic energy production have helped the world’s largest economy avoid oil price shocks like the one triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war.
