Several leading Chinese energy and technology companies have recently sought to expand cooperation with Vietnam Electricity (EVN), reflecting growing interest in Vietnam’s fast-developing power sector. The discussions took place from late May to mid-June 2025, as Vietnam accelerates implementation of its revised National Power Development Plan (PDP VIII), which targets the addition of nearly 100,000 MW of new power capacity by 2030.

On May 27, EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An met with representatives of Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. (SEC). The company expressed its desire to deepen cooperation with EVN in power generation and grid infrastructure. Having previously participated in major thermal power projects in Vietnam, such as Quang Ninh and Vinh Tan 2, Shanghai Electric is now looking to expand into renewable energy, including wind and solar power, in line with Vietnam’s energy transition goals.

The following day, EVN held talks with Baoding Tianwei Baobian Electric Co., Ltd. (BTW) to review the manufacturing of reactors for the 500 kV Lao Cai substation project. BTW showed interest in broader collaboration with EVN in fields such as power transmission, LNG power, nuclear energy, and pumped-storage hydropower, all of which are priorities in Vietnam’s long-term energy strategy.

On June 9, EVN CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan met with executives from Huawei’s Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit. Huawei highlighted its involvement in more than 300 renewable energy projects in Vietnam, mainly solar power, and proposed advanced solutions for grid digitalization, distributed energy management, and renewable integration.

Finally, EVN discussed potential cooperation with Shandong Doreen Electric Power Technology Co., Ltd., focusing on smart grid technologies, including IoT devices, solar-storage-charging systems, and data-driven grid management. Overall, the meetings underline Vietnam’s openness to foreign expertise as it modernizes its power system and supports sustainable growth.
