The U.S. Geological Survey states that bauxite deposits are mainly found in tropical regions, the Mediterranean, and the equatorial belt. Countries with significant bauxite deposits include Australia, Central and South America (Jamaica, Brazil, Suriname, Venezuela, Guyana), Africa (Guinea), Asia (India, China, Vietnam), and Europe (Greece, Russia).
Bauxite is a type of aluminum ore. From bauxite, alumina (Al2O3) can be extracted, which is the main material used to produce aluminum in electrolytic furnaces. The process of producing aluminum from bauxite involves two key stages: producing alumina (Al2O3) using the Bayer process and electrolyzing alumina to produce aluminum (Al).
In Vietnam, Dak Nong leads the country in bauxite reserves. According to the Deputy Director of the Vietnam Geological Department, Dak Nong has enormous potential for bauxite, with an estimated reserve of about 1.8 billion tons of refined ore, equivalent to 4.2 billion tons of raw ore, with an aluminum content of over 40%. Currently, bauxite reserves occupy about 35% of Dak Nong’s natural area.
Many areas have been surveyed, licensed for exploitation, and the bauxite mining and alumina processing industry is gradually becoming a pillar of the province’s economic structure. The unique feature of bauxite ore is that it is widely distributed across large areas, including regions with residential areas, roads, and infrastructure projects for socio-economic development.
Notably, Dak Nong is gradually overcoming investment procedures, paving the way for the rapid implementation of bauxite-alumina-aluminum exploitation projects.
Recently, Dak Nong has been striving to unlock the “gold mine” of bauxite. The Nhan Co Alumina Production Plant is the first and only plant located in Dak Nong province to process bauxite into alumina. The plant is designed with a capacity of 650,000 tons of alumina per year, and it is invested by the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV).
